On behalf of France and the European Union, Nicolas Sarkozy would like to pay tribute to the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Martti Ahtisaari. This decision crowns a long career devoted to peace and development under the auspices of the United Nations. His action in Aceh (Namibia) in the Horn of Africa, and in Kosovo, the creation of the ’Crisis management initiative’’ and his involvement in a number of international missions, particularly in Northern Ireland, are proof of this lifelong, tireless personal commitment.
Everywhere, and at all times, Martti Ahtisaari, has always faced difficult situations with realism and courage, as he showed recently as the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the status of Kosovo. Confronted by the impasse between both parties to reach a compromise, he defined a solution which heralded the supervised independence of Kosovo, corresponding to the wish of the vast majority of the population while ensuring the protection of minorities. France made clear its respect and support during this challenging time, and particularly sees in this Nobel Prize at this time, the recognition that President Ahtisaari’s proposal was the right one. France hopes that this decision will put an end to the controversy and pave the way for future action in furthering the European perspective in the Balkans.
Former President of the Republic of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari, was also one of the initiators for Finland’s entry into the European Union and remains a reference for the construction of Europe and peace on our continent.
France and the Presidency of the Council of the European Union convey their sincere congratulations to Martti Ahtisaari for this Nobel Peace Prize and thank him for his action.
